There are literally thousands of different locks and keys but you can be assured that Endeavour Locksmiths, the best locksmith in Melbourne, can recommend and supply one to meet your requirements.

There are two main groups of keying systems which provide quite different levels of security and key control:

  • Restricted master key systems which provide the best level of security with the ability to provide tiered access for individuals and robust key control. Keys can only be cut by the Master Locksmith who provided your system and then only with the authorization of a registered signatory. They cannot be cut by Mr Minit and the like.

  • Standard key systems which demand a high level of personal control of keys because they can be cut by anyone with a basic key cutting system These are the most common systems used in domestic installations and provide a adequate level of security if a widely recognized brand of lock (e.g. Lockwood) is used.

Endeavour Locksmiths will usually recommend a restricted key system or master key system for business users.

A Master Key System comprises of a hierarchy of keys and a number of cylinders / locks that allow different groups or individual key holders to gain access to all or specifically designated areas of a building or buildings.

Put simply, a master keyed lock is a lock that is designed to be opened by individual keys, but can also be opened by using a master key or in the case of a large system, a grand master key.

Regardless of the system you use, it is important to remember that Endeavour Locksmiths can re-key your locks, rather than replace them if the keys are compromised or if you want to deny access to people who hold your current keys.

Apart from sticking with a good brand of lock, it is important to ensure that your locksmith or installer is a member of the Master Locksmiths Association of Australia (MLAA) and the business and all the locksmiths they employ are registered under the Victorian Private Security Act, or similar legislation in your State. That way you will know that your security details are well protected.
