Change Door Locks – Replace or Re-Key?
A common request from customers is to “change door locks at my house”. However, unless the door lock is broken or the door lock is not working it is usually not necessary to change door locks by replacing them.
Changing door locks is an expensive option and Endeavour Locksmiths will generally check with the customer whether the door locks are broken or faulty. If they are not, Endeavour will recommend a lock re-key. It is the most inexpensive, cost-effective way to change door locks. In a lock re-key the internal settings of the lock are changed so that original keys or lost keys will not open the locks. At the same time the attending locksmith who is doing the re-key will cut and supply two new keys. When possible the locksmith will also ensure that all external door locks, including deadlocks and deadbolts, are all ‘keyed alike’ – meaning that they can all be opened and locked with the new keys supplied. Re-keying is a relatively inexpensive and convenient way of ensuring that old keys and lost keys will no longer work. It is really useful when you move into a new home or when new tenants move in.
TIP: Do not have a tag with your name and address on your key ring – that is an invitation for a finder to use your lost keys to enter your home if they are so inclined. I don’t even attach a phone number because I always make sure that I have a couple of sets of spare keys available.
